Day Trip to the Big Apple
Mander Organ at St Ignatius Daniel Roth at St John the Divine John Holt and Paul Stapel arranged a trip to
New York City on April 27, 2010. They were joined by Jean Henssler and
Richard Hedgebeth.
In the afternoon we were most graciously received at St. Ignatius RC Church where we had the opportunity of getting to know the four manual Mander organ. Our guide for this was Renée Louprette, Assistant Organist and Associate Director of Music. We later met up with Renée again, this time accompanied by her husband, at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. The occasion here was a great recital by Daniel Roth, titulaire du Grande-Orgue of Sainte-Sulpice, Paris, where he succeeds Widor, Dupré and Grunenwald. An interesting sidenote is that John had met M. Roth many years ago at one of the Harlem (Netherlands) competitions. On that occasion M. Roth and Lionel Rogg were contestants. After a nice reception following M. Roth's performance, we piled back into Paul's van and headed home, arriving late from our very long, but also very rewarding, day. |
